Cutting Crew Grinning Souls.

At present the uk music scene is rocking and rolling along nicely, new bands are drawing their influences from a wide range of retro sounds, groovy grooves and funky get downs.

Just listen to any radio station and more often than not the current batch of tunes on offer are strangely familiar, oddly compelling and caught in a time warp. It seems that any music can and does appeal. Good news for songwriters/bands and consumers alike.

A gritty new release from a band called Cutting Crew, featuring the distinctive, melodic voice of local lad Nick Van Eede is a pleasure to listen to, and by the second track you are captured.” Hard on you” has all the power and dynamics of a modern classic, refreshing honest, tormented and mesmerising.

There is no point in making comparisons to other artists as this album has everything you need. Some songs make you laugh, some cry, “ Boomerang “ makes you want to jump around the room, singing along. The lyrics are deliciously cynical; Absence makes the heart grow colder, absence makes the heart heal over. All the time Nick’s honey soaked vocals and superb musicianship all round give each song its own unique character, style and quality.

“Silhouette” is a tearjerker of epic proportions, bringing a lump to the throat as you realise how special friends leave us to question our own mortality. There is a strong sense of spiritual uplifting on the title track “ Grinning Souls “, which floats in the shadows, taking the listener with it.

As today’s media soaks us with 15-second wannabes this album is a gentle shower of rain; which will still be listened to in 15 years, and as “ getupandgetoverit “ demonstrates, life is to short for tears. And the end-jamming piece of the song just sounds like one big party. The last track “ Lauren’s theme” is a soaring classical entity, smoothing off a well written, delicately balanced production.

As “ Boomerang “ blasts out of the speakers for the umpteenth time, it leaves you with a big grin on your face, warmth in your heart and the comforting knowledge that no-one can see you dancing feverishly in your living room, except maybe the pigeons.
