East Grinstead's strategic position halfway between London and the South Coast, led to the establishment of many coaching inns. The name goes back to before 1636. In the 18th century it was almost completly rebuilt, using some of the original matrials and has also been named The Newe Innn, The Ounce and later The Catt, references to the while spotted leopard featured on teh Dorset family coat of arms. In it's hayday of coach travel there were an estimated 103 beds and 247 horses in the town, most at the Dorset. It's been a centre of activity in teh old high street for nearly 400 years....if these walls could speak..... |
